What Is In a Name: Politics of Spatial Imagination in Colonial Assam
Bodhisattva Kar
Recounting a protracted and conflictual history of the orientalist overnaming of Assam as Kāmarūpa, this tract probes the promise of an absolute space in both British imperial and Indian nationalist etymologically-charged historical thought. The historicist production of the space of British Assam as a recuperation of the purānic pale was a crucial condition for the modern forms and fantasies of the regional coherence we know by the name of Assam.
